چکیده

John S. Popovics Summary Lasers are devices that create a high intensity, directed light beam. The light beam can travel in air or through fiber optic cables. Lasers can be used to generate waves and detect stretching or motion in a solid material without direct contact with the material. Thus lasers are useful in many important engineering applications that require remote non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and sensing such as laser ultrasonics, “smart” structures and vibration sensing. In this lesson, necessary basic concepts about light, lasers, fiber optics and wave propagation are introduced. The basis of wave generation and sensing with lasers is given. Finally specific engineering applications that make use laser-based techniques are described.

Application of High-amplitude Ultrasound for Non- Destructive Evaluation

High-amplitude ultrasound (u0 > 100 nm) generated by pulsed laser material processing carries important information about the mechanisms of light-material interaction and the propagation of the wave within the work-piece. In addition, it can also be applied for the purpose of non-destructive evaluation of the sample. The propagation of high-amplitude ultrasonic waves inside a plate is measured ...

Non-Destructive Evaluation of Multi-layer Piping using Laser Ultrasonic Technique

Abstract Recently, multilayer piping has been used widely. Multilayer piping has excellent durability and corrosion resistance. An effective means for quality maintenance of multilayer piping is the laser ultrasonic technique for checking the state of adhesion of the vinyl chloride layer and the steel layer of multilayer piping. The wave is refracted at the interface between the steel layer and...

Three-dimensional non-destructive optical evaluation of laser-processing performance using optical coherence tomography.

We demonstrate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a non-destructive diagnostic tool for evaluating laser-processing performance by imaging the features of a pit and a rim. A pit formed on a material at different laser-processing conditions is imaged using both a conventional scanning electron microscope (SEM) and OCT. Then using corresponding images, the geometrical characteristic...

Non-destructive evaluation methods for subsurface damage in silicon wafers: a literature review

The Subsurface Damage (SSD) in silicon wafers induced by any mechanical material-removal processes has to be removed by subsequent processes. Therefore, the measurement of SSD is critically important for cost-effective manufacturing of silicon wafers. This review paper presents several Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods for SSD in silicon wafers, including X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman s...

Optical Non Destructive Testing Methods Using Continuous Wave, Pulsed or Diode Type Lasers

Optical Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) laser based methods include among others, Holographic Interferometry, its subsequent development into Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry ( ESPI ), and another speckle technique known as Shearography. These laser based methods are very attractive in that they provide full field view non-contacting means of determining material conditions, in engine...
